s/gnome2/mate + gnome3 ?

Since GNOME 2 is no longer maintained upstream and MATE is the continuation of
GNOME 2, could we rip out the GNOME 2 packages, replace them with MATE, and
move forward with GNOME 3 in pkgsrc?
