this turned out to be the underlying issue ... thanks for that ... :)

Have downloaded all the pre-built 2009Q1 packages and the associated
pkgsrc bundle ... being able to seamlessly compile and package those
packages which aren't for FTP download (mplayer/mencoder in the main)
is well worth it ... thanks ... :)
