libtool failure on OpenSolaris

hi,

on OpenSolaris 2008.05 with SunStudio pro compiler suite (Sun C 5.8
Patch 121016-05 2007/01/10), I get errors like the following for a
number of packages:

./libtool --mode=compile gcc -O  -I. -c ./jcapimin.c
libtool: compile: unable to infer tagged configuration
libtool: compile: specify a tag with `--tag'
*** Error code 1

[db4]
/scratch/databases/db4/work/.tools/bin/sh ./libtool --mode=compile g++
-c -I. -I
../dist/.. -I/usr/include -D_REENTRANT -D_POSIX_PTHREAD_SEMANTICS -O
-I/usr/include ../dist/../cxx/cxx_db.cpp
libtool: compile: unable to infer tagged configuration

*** Error code 1


  Any idea why this is failing, and how to fix it?  Are other
(Open)Solaris users also seeing this?
