Rolling back the compiler is not infeasible because of "industrially
relevant machines", it's infeasible because the C++ standard is a time
series and one needs to be able to run off-the-shelf software.

This problem is only going to get worse as newer languages continue to
gain in popularity; most of these are accompanied by even less
interest in portability.

In the absence of enough loose money flowing around to allow three or
four people to spend all their time raising ponies, there are only a
limited number of options.
