The bad change has been reverted by kre (thanks).  I am very sorry for
this.  My version of the lib was working fine, I updated the source to
merge in some changes that had been made since my last check out but
didn't recheck (my bad) some interaction between my updated refresh.c
and other changes has caused the hang.  I will work out what is
happening here...
