For true(1) on amd64, we execute 0.05% more instructions for extra TMPDIR environment variable. $ ./singlestepper true Total count: 1286742 $ TMPDIR=/tmp ./singlestepper true Total count: 1287399 That is negligible cost of getting TMPDIR propagated to most programs.
