Is this a real need? Anyway...

I'd would create a version.h right now, it would be simple enough.

I don't see the real usefulness of the thing, but it doesn't seem like
it will cause any real harm so so long as it doesn't incorporate the
*build* date.

If you want it and you're willing to do the work, go for it.
