  If the PAM infrastructure is so poorly-written as to incur THAT much
overhead, then I consider that in itself to be a bug.  I realize that it
brings a great deal of functionality to the table, but man, at some
point one just has to admit that something is "overdone".  PAM
definitely falls into that category as far as I'm concerned.
