Well, the full md0a is a secondary effect: the core dump fills it.
We might consider making it mount -o nocoredump for install media.

The more interesting question is: why to you get the illegal instruction
traps?

A -current install works fine at least on simh for a 3900:

MicroVAX 3800/3900
total memory = 65468 KB
avail memory = 59696 KB
timecounter: Timecounters tick every 10.000 msec
mainbus0 (root)
cpu0 at mainbus0: KA655, CVAX microcode rev 6 Firmware rev 83

(been doing that a lot lately ;-))
