Because the VAX (1977) predates IEEE 754 floating point (1985) by
almost a decade. So, obviously, the VAX uses its own FP format. This
leads to errors with software that asumes "all the FP in the world is
IEEE 754 FP and there is nothing else then IEEE 754 FP".

It should be in CVS as NetBSD is based on 4.4BSD.
