This sounds so strange.
I agree with MOJ that it looks like the VAX don't see the answers from your mop 
server. Why I don't know, and I'm getting to the point where I'd need to 
actually sit at the system to see what is going on, and why...
Do the machine have several interfaces?
Do your switch have some management functionality?
Check the cables!
