Question is - what kind of HDD (size-wise) would be compatible?

wd0 at atabus0 drive 0: <Maxtor 6Y160P0>
wd0: drive supports 16-sector PIO transfers, LBA48 addressing
wd0: 152 GB, 317632 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 320173056 sectors

this is on NetBSD 3.1 on a ultra5.

OTOH, the IDE controller on the U5/U10 is soooo slow that it might be more
fun to get a IDE-to-CF adaptor, boot from a 1G CF card, and put a real
hard disk on a SATA adapter...

Or, in case you have such equipment sitting around, stick a SymBIOS 53cXXX and a SCSI disk in there, the firmware ROM has support for most of them. I used an ASUS-badged 53x875 ( obviously with PC firmware ) in my U10 ages ago with no hassle whatsoever. That's bootable, beats the onboard IDE controller and you can still use whatever you want for your main data dump. Not sure if the ROM supports U2W-SCSI or U160 controllers but pretty much anything SymBIOS up to UW-SCSI should Just Work(tm)

have fun
Michael
