I had a similar problem once. It turned out that the X-server's 
keyboard-driver was broken and the bindings couldn't be handled properly. 
Once I got on the X's virtual terminal I was stuck.
I'd check the logs for any broken config and/or reinstall and reconfig the 
drivers.
