Yup, what you're missing is this - the Xserver is fundamentally
broken but we'll have to live with it until someone writes something
better, which isn't going to happen any time soon. It's the Xserver's
fault that it uses the console incorrectly. It's not radeonfb which
messes up the Xserver, it's the Xserver that relies on switching in
and out of WSDISPLAYIO_MODE_GRAPHICS without any changes in the
graphics chip.
Radeonfb does exactly the right thing - it whacks the blitter over
the head, re-initializes whatever video mode it's been using and
redraws the console. It might be broken elsewhere but not here.
So, the sane approach would be to either fix XFree86/Xorg's radeon
driver to move all hardware setup after switching back and forth or
to prevent the console mode change altogether.
