Working SS 2 with a color graphics card here.  About ten years ago, 
purchased an adapter cable with a DB13W3 connector and a DE15.  With a 
fairly ordinary VGA type monitor connected, the display works with no 
problem.  Vaguely I recall the adapter being under $20, through eBay 
and sent from California.  If you have trouble finding one, I can hunt 
for the old shipping bill with vendor name.

A small investment to make the intrinsic display work.  It will 
simplify your troubeshooting.
