can you compare the *uncompressed* size of these?  perhaps the PIC ones
generate something far more compressible?

ps. i have a plan to make GCC emit compressed debug info by default,
which should reduce the installed size considerably (and perhaps,
slightly reduce the .tgz, since .gz.gz tends to get you another 1-2%.)
