OK, with that hint I'm now up and running again, with an
ofwboot.xcf from "I'm-not-really-sure-where".

The one from 7.1 doesn't work for booting the GENERIC kernel:
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 70934 Mar 11 21:22 ofwboot.xcf

The one from 6.1 doesn't work either:
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 62930 Dec 29 17:13 ofwboot.xcf

The one which actually boots my 6.1 machine works for booting 7.1
as well, but I suspect it's of 5.x vintage (or older):
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 50660 May 26 15:29 ofwboot.xcf

The latter is copied off the HFS partition on my other PPC Mac
Mini (which works), and is now the one I'm using.

The boot loader probably should print which OS-version it comes
from; the 6.1 and 7.1 ofwboot.xcf both claim to be version 1.12,
while they are clearly different (not that one works better than
the other, mind you).

I can't tell what version the working one is; the ofwboot.xcf
printouts has vanished before the screen unblanks, and isn't
preserved in the message buffer (of course), and "strings -a" on
the file doesn't immediately reveal the secret either, although
the build date appears to be "Sat Dec 15 23:31:51 PST 2007".

Anyway, with that I'm up and running the 7.1 kernel.

Thanks for the hint!

Regards,

- Håvard
