That _is_ odd.

Not quite (it's possible both your machines are flaky in similar ways)
but I certainly do agree that effort would be better expended looking
elsewhere, until and unless evidence appears pointing at the hardware.

My diskless macppc build of the 5.2 world is proceeding nicely; looking
for "===>" lines in the logfile, the last one is

dependall ===> gnu/usr.bin/rcs/lib

Your machines are G4s; mine is a 750.  I don't know if that's relevant,
but with trouble that could be something like cache flushing issues, it
very well might be.  (In fact, the boot-time messages I see include

cpu0: 305.89 MHz L2 cache present but not enabled 

so there are a bunch of issues that might be absent on my hardware....)
