Current Linux desktops are a point and drool idiot compatibility layer.
I am no idiot (at least I hope) so I am not compatible with that. ;-)

Same here. fvwm with a config that I carry on for, puhh, maybe 18
years, a bunch of xterms, sylpheed (GUI MUA) and firefox. xpdf, xzgv
and Viking + Merkkartor (GIS software) when needed.

Well. They are basicly serial devices, RS232 with TTL voltage level.
People have hooked them up to PeeCees via voltage level converters to
regular RS232 ports. Today you can get TTL RS232 USB adapters for less
then an (PPC) Apple and an egg... ;-)
