A 5.99.49 kernel from 201104131241Z boots without problems.  Now building
from 201106170000Z (5.99.53).  The netBSD 5.1_STABLE build host now has
its own local source tree, so it should be a bit faster.  An initial
attempt at an update build failed, so a clean build was started.
