/dev/audio - touch it to initialize?

When I boot from disk (not from CD!), the speaker starts pumping
out "white noise", which I kill with 

        dd if=/dev/audio of=/dev/hull bs=1 count=1

Has anyone else run into this?

The machine is a "Quicksilver" G4, running NetBSD 5.0.2
