Sounds like Xmacppc and the framebuffer disagree about colour depth.
Do you see the same problem with XFree86 and wsfb? Or whatever driver
matches your graphics chip?

XFree86 is just fine using driver "nv".

Ok, so it's probably a bug in Xmacppc.
Out of curiosity - why do you want to use Xmacppc? It doesn't offer any acceleration and uses whatever colour depth the console runs in, usually 8 bit.

It uses default mode 600x480 though but display appearance is completely undistorted.

You can always change that. If your monitor doesn't support DDC2 just add its frequency ranges to the Monitor section and pick whatever mode you want.
