I have overlooked the important information relating the Ethernet i/f
of PB3400c.

Could you try not having 'autoselect' word on /etc/ifconfig.de0 ?
say, for example,
inet 192.168.1.1 netmask 0xffffff00 media 10Base-T
or just
192.168.1.1 netmask 0xffffff00 media 10Base-T

I don't believe the case matters on argument of media.
