Subject: experiences with Thinkpad T30 or X30 with 1.6?

I am about to get a new laptop and am looking at the Thinkpad T30 and
X30. This will run NetBSD 1.6-stable (and win2k under vmware), but
I'm happy to merge in small bits if that helps. I'm looking for
thin/light, decent battery life; this is not a 'desktop replacement'
kind of notebook. X has to work (but no 3d etc. needed - gnome and
emacs working ok is just fine). I am willing to punt on the internal
modem. I would like internal ethernet, 802.11, sound, and APM to work
reasonably.

Kevin Oberman reports on freebsd lists that that the 1400x1050 display
on the high-end T30s gets wedged due to bios bugs but he can unwedge
it by switching to text mode and turning off the display and switching
back to the X11 vty. I have seen no indications that the 1024x768
models have this problem.

I found some reason to believe the T30 works well:

but also a problem with 1.6:

searches for 'x30 netbsd' seem to turn up mostly shellcode...

Any reports of how well the T30 or X30 work or don't work would be
greatly appreciated. I've been in the "IBM stuff works camp", so I'm
inclined to get a Thinkpad; I'm typing this on a 3.5 year old 600E
that I carry around nearly all the time.

In particular, can one install NetBSD on the X30 without the X3 media
base and an ultrabay2000 cdrom drive or floppy? It seems the X30
comes without a floppy. Has anyone booted off CF? (The X30 has one
Type 2 PCMCIA slot and a Type 2 CF slot.)

I apologize if I failed to find stuff in the archives; google indicated
that there wasn't much out there on this subject.

	Thanks,
