My ultimate goal is the lego mindstorms EV3. It doesn’t seem to have a lot of support. However, I also have access to an imx23-olinuxino, which is supported. My plan is to do it in two steps: Get the imx23-olinuxino working using device trees, and then work on the ev3.

I agree. However, the discussion on this list from Thursday suggests a FDT-based implementation would be preferred.
As I’m just doing it for fun, I don’t really mind if it takes a bit longer.
