I know Debian Linux can boot using a root fs on USB, but because the image is big, an Apex bit loader is flashed as a second stage after Redboot, which, in turn, loads the kernel image and init ram drive image.

Regarding NetBSD, there are 3 images produced using the instructions in the wiki, one for NFS root and 2 for usb1 and usb2 roots.
I suppose copying the root fs tree I already have shared via NFS on a USB stick or HDD should work, but I don't know what is the necessary partition format and if I can achieve this from Linux. Any help would be appreciated.
