I was able to get the card to boot using the combined u-boot image here:

<http://dl.cubieboard.org/software/a20-cubietruck/lubuntu/ct-lubuntu-card0-v1.00/u-boot-sunxi-with-spl-ct-20131102.bin>

The 20140107 build from the same directory didn't work, it just printed a
register dump and rebooted.

I was able to load both compressed and uncompressed netbsd kernels from
a msdos partition on the sd card.
