The data abort is due to use of a higher clock frequency.

If BeagleBone gets power externally instead of from USB it will use a
higher CPU clock frequency. Some code cannot handle this change of
clock frequency and causes a data abort. To get the code working
unplug any external power supplies and use USB as the power source.
