How to build a monolithic kernel?

How do I build an old style monolithic kernel?

arm/evbarm kernels appear to be defaulting to modular kernel but that's a
pain with the boot loaders. And I'd like to try a new kernel with old
userspace without this:

We recommend creating a non-root account and using su(1) for root access.

Disabling MODULAR doesn't help in kernel config since:

sys/arch/evbarm/conf/TISDP2420:10: options `MODULAR' is not defined
*** Stop.
ERROR: nbconfig failed for TISDP2420

I'm compiling the kernels with build.sh ... kernel=TISDP2420.
