That's not true! I started with 1bit and 8bit X11, and added 2-, 3- and 4-bit X11 to my portfolio once I had NetBSD/Amiga.
Err, sorry, yes, of course, 1bit, 2bit, 3bit, 4bit and 8bit, even dual-screen. I meant that 8Bit was the maximum depth in X11(R3|R4) for years.
