Just a followup - on 1.6.2, I get several hundred lines of:

../../innobase/pars/../include/buf0buf.h:874: parse error before `*'

for mysql-server (4.0.22) before gmake fails, and:

I was able to create a mysql-3.23.58nb3 server binary package, if you're
