Being port master
Hello all,
Now that it is official I'm the new NetBSD/Amiga port maintainer,
let me mention a few random things.
They're not really new... just want to mention them.
- Remember NetBSD is volunteer work. I have a job to do, and a little kid
to care for, so I only can do NetBSD/Amiga work a couple of hours per week.
This not only means that I'll sometimes
do more, sometimes less work, or none for some time. This also means that
when you needed a few weeks to answer a question I sent you when dealing
with some problem, I might not remember the details, so it might be wise
to summarize in a few lines.
On the other hand, if you answer quickly, do not cite all of my and your old
letters... it will take me time to read all of this and find the new parts.
Another one, when I deal with bug reports, I ask for more information using
the gnats system ("Status changed to feedback"). This might look like an
automatic status update, but isn't really. Reply to such mail. Even if
somebody else was handling the report.
- Bug reports, new code etc. is best shortly handled:
a) maybe in port-amiga or current-users, to find out whether this is
really new, and where it belongs
b) when this has been verified, via the GNATS bug tracking system (use
send-pr from a working NetBSD system or the WWW page form, if your
NetBSD system doesn't have any networking connection).
"b)" makes sure that the matter is recorded, and can be handled by other
people, too. It's not wise to e-mail something directly to me... it would
depend on me a) receiving the mail, b) my machine not eating it before I
notice, c) me handling it immediately, or not forgetting it by the time I
can handle it. Having the information outside of my machine, too, helps a
lot.
And yes, there are people beside me who have done Amiga specific or NetBSD
generic work, and have handled bug reports or code additions in the past,
and I trust them to judge what is right to do, and where to ask for others
opinions (e.g. mine).
Regards,
Ignatios Souvatzis
