NetBSD-9 + VirtualBox = broken xdm rendering

I upgraded my NB8.1 atop Oracle VirtualBox and found
the initial xdm login graphics is now broken, for specific,
black rectangles around input field and text remains
invisible. Anyone out there who has the same issue?
Might be avoidable by VirtualBox upgrade though.
