Installing just one of the old 1GB modules (with a 2GB on) made no difference (but both rEFIt and macOS still booted fine, and still saw and used only the 3GB then installed). However installing both old 1GB modules gets NetBSD one or two steps further! Now the video mode changes (to full-screen, with a solid large block cursor, as opposed to the small box of text centred on the screen when the firmware is running and when NetBSD's boot loader runs); and the system does not appear to lock up quite as completely (the caps lock key still toggles its light; and pressing the power button for one short press makes the cursor disappear, but does not finish the shutdown). However still nothing is printed on the console by the kernel. -- Greg A.
