I also have this same problem on my AlphaServer 1000A and posted about it back 
in 2009 (http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-alpha/2009/06/19/msg000314.html).  
See that thread for the response.  The summary is that "this is a known 
problem, see PR/40077."
