I haven't run gDesklet for a long time, but IIRC, other desklet packages didn't appear on the screen if gDesklet was built without libXau.so.My point simple is that libXau has been provided by Xorg for quite a while and checking for it would be simple. This doesn't help in some situations e.g. for plugins, so the question is whether a dynamic version is really needed.
It was needed when I ran gDesklets last time. If only a static version is available, the package builds with a warning, and desklet packages don't work.
