Re: php-nextcloud 33.0.6!

Not sure if useful or if this applies to NetBSD as well, but let me post my two cents anyway.

I have been running a so-called lipkg zone on Illumos/OmniOS for years with nginx, php and php-nextcloud from pkgsrc. A while ago I bumped into one php-nextcloud release that was purged from the pkgsrc repo, which got me stuck, preventing me from upgrading any further.

Long story short, I removed the php-nextcloud as used from pkgsrc and installed Nextcloud manually from the official tarball from https://download.nextcloud.com/server/releases/ - starting with the version I was stuck at - while keeping al dependent php packages from pkgsrc.
That way I can:

- update all packages used from pkgsrc the usual way,
- update Nextcloud itself using the built-in update mechanism, one major version at a time.

It also requires upgrading PHP and the dependent MariaDB database releases, since the dependencies from Nextcloud evolve over time, but that is a separate matter.

In the past I have also seen things break when using php-nextcloud from pkgsrc and updating using the built-in update mechanism once, which screwed up the pkgsrc update cycle with all sorts of errors. So don't mix update mechanisms... It is too risky to grab php-nextcloud from pkgsrc IMHO. Grabbing Nextcloud itself from the official archives while using pkgsrc for all dependencies works much better.

Cheers,
Andries

Hi Greg!

I had an old working Nextcloud setup, but then the PHP bug hit, so I
needed to upgrade. This required (ahem!) upgrade from NetBSD 9.3 to 11.0
and an ensuing upgrade of Nextcloud to 33.0.8 (from many major versions
below). But I just cannot get it to work.

I'm trying to use nginx (admittedly not my primary area of expertise)
and I get to the point where

     php --define apc.enable_cli=1 occ maintenance:install

runs just fine and is quite happy, but if I then go to the web
interface, I'm met with:

     Nextcloud

Nextcloud – a safe home for all your data

and nothing more.

A couple of quick questions. What do you use?

1. Web server? (nginx? apache? something else?)

2. PHP version? (8.[234]?)

3. Are there any specific hints that you can think of? (If I ever get it
    to work again, I would consider writing a HOWTO ... ;-) )

... because I can only dream of you having a step-by-step guide, right? ;-)

Any hints obviously much appreciated.

In coordination with ryoon@, I have updated php-nextcloud to 33.0.6 from
32.0.12. It's running for me with no troubles. If you are a nextcloud
user, you might try updating (after making backups as always), so that
if there are any issues we can address them before 2026Q3. I do not
expect any problems.
Assuming you wish to use pkgsrc binary packages, if you are running a
version before 32, you are overdue for an upgrade. 2026Q3 will have
php-nextcloud 33.
I do not plan to add a versioned package for 32; no one who is up to
date will need it.
If you are using 31, now would be a good time to upgrade to 32 via
php-nextcloud from 2026Q2 :-) If you are using 30, now would be a good
time to upgrade to 31 via php-nextcloud31 and then 32 via php-nextcloud
from 2026Q2. (As always, your system, your call -- but pkgsrc only
supports nextcloud staying up to date every quarter.)
I will consider updating to 34 during the fall. 34.0.1 was released two
weeks ago, so it's not yet ready for production in my opinion, but
34.0.5 should happen at the end of October.
Greg
