The spectre of emergency upgrades has for me been a reason to try to
keep everything update every quarter, but I know that's a lot of work.

Just befopre you did this would have been the best time to make extra
backups. Right now is the next best time.

Do read the nextcloud admin manual. This is mostly not about pkgsrc.

Three things to check immedidately come to mind:

  - nextcloud has a complicated db schema and only supports upgrading
from one major version to the next. I think that's a bug (in
nextcloud) but that's how it is. If your old system was 32, that's
fine, but if not you'll need to run all the intermediate ones.

  - generally, one makes some changes to php config, and if you change
php versions (8.2 to 8.3, micros don't count) you have to migrate
that. My changes are all increased resource limits, which shouldn't
    be necessary.

  - uid/gid is very messy. You need to have nginx, nextcloud, php_fpm
all coordinated. I am in the process of rationalizing things, but
if you are using 2026Q3 you shouldn't have those changes. The
manual will not help you because this is different on pkgsrc vs
    debian.

The basic issue is having uid/gid for roles, vs programs, and then
how to deal with programs that interoperate. nginx uses fpm, and
fpm runs php so that it needs to read/write nextcloud bits.

I use nginx, and php_fpm.

8.4, but I think it doesn't matter.

You should be able to put nextcloud into and out of maintenance mode and
upgrade (from 32). That mostly shows that php is ok, but if you can
upgrade and take it out of maintenance mode it means your db update
issues are behind you.

You then need to read logs and figure out what uids are being used, and
what the user/group is on the fpm socket that nginx talks to.

So....

what was your old nextcloud version

  did you have nginx before?

  are you using php_fpm?
