The package installs a README.pkg, which says:

In order to read the default X resources and Motif widget settings,
Mgdiff requires the XAPPLRESDIR environmental variable to be set to:

        /usr/pkg/lib/X11/app-defaults

So, depending on your shell, you'll need to set something like

export XAPPLRESDIR=/usr/pkg/lib/X11/app-defaults

before starting mgdiff.
