Interesting...
$ xcompmgr -c
 then start FreeCAD:

Tried kicad with xcompmgr on and the computer locked up.

I didn't see any of that with the different modes I tried.

FreeCAD often starts up with a blank window. I select about where
the File menu is and the dropdown opens up and from there the window
shows up. Also interesting, it appears that displaying text is what
causes trash in the window. If I hover the mouse in the object
drawing area, the window mostly cleans up but if I hover over areas
with text, trash is drawn all over again.
