Well, not quite. The problem is that the gimp build is buggy and looks
for things installed in the system instead of the build dir. It's not
an error to have old versions installed when building. Aside from bulk
builds, it's the normal case. This kind of bug is fairly common, and
does or used to exist in the glib2/gtk world, mumble gir.
But indeed, removing the old gimp works around this build bug. And
thus almost nobody is motivated to fix it, because they use bulk, or
because they figured this out by removing the old in which case they no
longer need to build with the old one installed.
