Debugging a go build

Hi,

I am trying to cobble together a package for the mattermost* server, 
taking inspiration from the FreeBSD and Arch packages.

At this point, I have a lengthy go-modules.mk file, and the build 
processes a lengthy list of modules, doing whatever golang does, then 
stops with a terse

*** Error code 1

The pkgsrc PKG_VERBOSE and PKG_DEBUG_LEVEL knobs don't help, and ktrace 
produces a 20+ GB output file that is unmanageable.

Any ideas what go might be doing here, and how to get more information?
