I think you can also set IGNORE_GFORTRAN=yes which seems
better than using underscored variables but I'm not sure
what the difference is for practical purposes.
Fortran is not a rapidly evolving language so I think it
would be nice if pkgsrc could just assume that any gfortran
found in PATH or at least /usr/bin is viable if the user
didn't put any customisations in mk.conf.
