mail/getmail and mail/getmail6 impending changes for next Q4
Greetings users, develociraptors,
We plan for Q4 to modify how mail/getmail and mail/getmail6 packages are
being consumed via pkgsrc.
Now (fixed in incoming pkgsrc's release with its latest v6.19.10),
mail/getmail6 should be an exact 1:1 working replacement of
mail/getmail. The biggest change being Python 3 support; which
mail/getmail in its last 5.16 release still lacks, and remains bound to
python27.
Anyone that use mail/getmail, we advise you to give mail/getmail6 a try
and report back (to jym@ at least) in case you observe regressions. The
latest version had various NetBSD and MacOS bug fixes upstreamed.
To reflect the multiversioning, mail/getmail will become mail/getmail5,
and CONFLICT with mail/getmail6 to prevent confusion around their
respective binaries and make the python2 vs python3 pkg more apparent.
Both projects have separate maintainers, separate mastersites, and have
little cooperation in terms of bug fixing. getmail6 was never blessed as
successor of getmail (v5), so we opted for a path of least friction and
keep both in tree.
getmail5 ought to work as long as python27 remains; we prefer to give
pkgsrc-users@ a choice instead of forcing down a switch to a secondary
project not bound to the original; still at your own risk considering
that python27 is eol.
Thanking you all for your attention,
--
