"Interesting"... presumably a thunderbird run from a remote machine
*to* the NetBSD display also shows artifacts.
Another possible data point - if you install tigervnc and run 'vncserver'
it should start a virtual desktop you can connect to using "vncviewer
localhost:1" *or* from the mac using a vnc client. From within that
session you should be able to start thunderbird. I suspect in both
cases it will not show artifacts...
Unless your local network is entirely secure you may want to run
"vncpasswd $HOME/.config/tigervnc/passwd" before you start vncserver
