The sample rate is the number of samples per second (duh).

There are two common sample rates: 44.1 kHz, which is used in Audio
CDs; and 48 kHz, which is used in DVD Audio (?) IIRC. You probably
have a mixture of both.

You can use the "resample" function in sox to adapt everything to one
rate (44.1 is a good choice if you eventually want to master a CD, for
instance). Be aware though that there is a bit of a quality loss.
