It's the sort of distro which: * gives you complete freedom, doesn't get in the way, and lets you do whatever you want with your system (unlike Arch which prevents partial upgrades, or Gentoo, with masked packages breaking automated updates). * unless needed, always tries to deliver unpatched software (unlike Debian, and to a good extent Arch). I think this adapts better to a OS-agnostic framework like pkgsrc. * extremely simple and transparent, largely managed via posix scripts * no intricate SELinux craziness enabled by default (unlike CentOS/RHEL) * easy to install via the text installer, let's you select only the software you want. * BSD-like rc.d service scripts on a SysV init. * stable, well-maintained, with security patches delivered in no-time and announced on a dedicated mailing list. * nice little community * historically playing nicely with pkgsrc. * you can use some of my binary packages for Slackware 15.0 (I only package what I use, but I accept requests), updated quarterly, built with PREFER_PKGSRC=yes and a lot of options enabled by default, to mimic SmartOS' pkgsrc setup. https://retrobsd.ddns.net/pub/packages/All/ For a minimal install, I tend to follow: - https://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Slackware-Minimal_Install - https://pub.nethence.com/slack/minimal, which includes a `slackstrap' script for the purpose.
