pkg_comp how to preserve `work' directory on failure

I find that when pkg_comp exits, the work directories are deleted
automatically even in case of error. The log files are saved. But that may
not be enough. Is there any way to have pkg_comp preserve work?

Is pkg_comp suitable for development of packages, such as creating patches
etc. or it's meant only for bulk builds of packages that compile fine?

BTW pkg_comp is mentioned under "more obscure pkg utilities" in pkgsrc
guide. Is it used normally by many users or it's really obscure?
