I have not fully thought this through, but guile 1.8 is really unmaintained at this point, and it's hard to conceive of any maintained code that should still be using it. Guile 2.0 was released in 2011! So I'm going to have a look to see if anything needs it that itself should stay. This may be too much for pre-branch, but it may be that nothing uses it and nobody cares. Speak up if you use guile 1.8 or something that depends on it.
