Unfortunately that isn't enough. The build of Hercules itself fails:

  CCLD cckdcdsk
ld: /usr/lib/ and /usr/lib/crt0.o: warning: multiple common of `environ'
ld: /usr/pkgsrc/wip/sdl-hercules-hyperion/work/hyperion-Release_4.3/.libs/ undefined reference to `__sync_fetch_and_add_8'
ld: /usr/pkgsrc/wip/sdl-hercules-hyperion/work/hyperion-Release_4.3/.libs/ undefined reference to `__atomic_compare_exchange_8'
gmake[2]: *** [Makefile:2081: cckdcdsk] Error 1
gmake[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/pkgsrc/wip/sdl-hercules-hyperion/work/hyperion-Release_4.3'

Gcc generates code to call runtime functions that don't exist...
